“Ask a Lawyer Day” is the North Carolina Bar Association Young Lawyers Division project that recruits lawyers to spend a Saturday consulting with members of the general public. The volunteer attorneys staff tables in a public place and discuss general legal questions with the public. The focus is not on giving specific legal advice or representation, but on giving suggestions as to how problems might be solved. It is an excellent opportunity not only to provide a valuable and much needed public service but also to project a positive image of the legal profession as a whole, educate the general public about our legal system, and give young lawyers practical experience in counseling clients.  They have had a great turnout in Wilmington in the past, and the volunteer attorneys have been able to provide guidance and free legal advice to hundreds of people in our area.

This year, “Ask a Lawyer Day” will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Independence Mall.  They are asking attorneys to volunteer their time in 2 hour shifts. All attorneys are welcome no matter their area of practice or level of experience. To assist the volunteers in working with participants, attorneys will be provided with a collection of resource materials including a handbook with answers to frequently asked questions commonly encountered in these types of events, such as domestic law, landlord-tenant, employment law, and so forth.

If you are interested in volunteering, please send an email to Pamela Carter at pcarter@hedrickgardner.com with the following information:
1. Your name and contact information;
2. Your area of practice; and
3. Your choice of the following shifts: 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

If you have any questions, please contact the event coordinators, Pamela Carter at pcarter@hedrickgardner.com, or Andy Jones at ajones@rountreelossee.com.
